Tolong - Just one more try
Whykenot, a creative platform for local budding artists, launched a store at the Gifting Edition 2019. The theme was to make an artwork that is inspired by the word long - lelong, kelong, bua long long. I chose the word tolong in the end, which means "please" in dialect.
Sketch
The word 'Tolong' meant 'please', as if begging. It reminded me of this gambling advertisement which used to be pretty popular in Singapore, where a father begs his daughter for the money in her piggy bank - he also tells her it's going to be the last time he's going to do this.
Final
In the end, I decided to give the piece a warmer palette with a little green to contrast the warmness of the girl to the evilness of the hand.
Form and Colour
The colours I picked out were supposed to give a more mysterious atmosphere. The hand being the ominous figure - or genie-like.
Before going into colour, I check the monochrome value first to establish the foreground, midground and background.
